ASL-English Bilingualism Boosts Your Brain

Presented by Dr. E. Lynn Jacobowitz and Dr. Adonia K. Smith

Being an ASL-English Bilingual brain does provide you with a big boost. Research studies have shown that utilizing multiple language boosts brain function. ASL-English Bilingual brain boosters include bilingual, bicultural, bilingualism & the brain, early self-expression and communication modalities. Historically, bilingualism has been a neglected subject and as a result, bilinguals have suffered in learning environments.

This presentation (through lecture, PowerPoint slides and discussion) explains how ASL-English bilingualism can provide a boost in teaching strategies, using handshapes and other parameters for both Deaf and Hearing ASL-English bilinguals. Participants will understand the impact of six ASL-English Bilingualism brain boosters on all ASL-English bilinguals and learn few techniques that can be integrated in Deaf education and ASL/Deaf Studies programs. Some video clips will be demonstrated for each booster. ASL-English bilingualism makes sense for Deaf brains, and bilingualism also makes sense for hearing brains. Everybody needs a healthy boost!

Preserve, Protect and Promote ASL:  What Professionals in the ASL Community Can Do

Presented by Raychelle Harris, Ph, D.

How do we preserve, protect and promote ASL?  To begin, we need to identify classical examples of marginalization and linguicism of minority languages and cultures such as ours.  Some historical and current examples of marginalization of ASL and the ASL community members will be shared.  Looking at other linguistic minorities and how they preserve, protect and promote their language and culture, we can borrow their techniques on how to preserve, protect and promote ASL for all.
